About the performance:

Deep Time moves in music’s archaeology, as well as its vibrant contemporary, with mixing different layers of time and musical moods. From the bronchial melancholic primal sounds and Hildegard of Bingen's sacred songs, to Jonas Sj?blom’s rhythmic electronic sound.

Wearing Zita Merényis inventive garments, the dancers reflect the long term and temporary traces of mankind on planet Earth. Instead of tailoring lines Merényi uses soldering to create scar lines and holes in the fabric.

The piece plays with a fantasy world on the edge between prehistoric times and the future, populated by gods, animal-like beings and humans. Deep Time reminds us about the limited time perspective of our own existence.

About the Artist:

The works of Swedish/ Finnish choreographer and dancer Virpi are full of secrets; sometimes bodying a spiritual warrior, a spectral gardener, or a shaman in metamorphosis. Pahkinen’s unique choreography acts like an incantation and creates a meditative atmosphere. She is well known for her stunningly chiseled shapes and almost otherworldly moves.

Among her many collaborations transcending the artistic borders is the famous theatre director Ingmar Bergman, and the world renowned clarinetist Martin Fr?st. Pahkinen has alos created commissioned works for several companies such as Ballet Poznanski, Vietnamese National Opera Ballet, North 59° and Finnish Opera Ballet.

In 2011 Pahkinen was awarded the Swedish royal medal Litteris et Artibus, for her outstanding artistic contributions as a dancer and choreographer. She was also awarded the City of Stockholm’s Cullberg Prize in 2014.

The magic of Virpi Pahkinen’s expression lies in the intense presence and interpersonal connection with audiences all over the globe. With humour and gravity Virpi Pahkinen’s choreographies offer to lead the way to new, deeper insights.

About the Company:

"Virpi Pahkinen Dance Company is led by the choreographer, dancer and artistic director Virpi Pahkinen. The ensemble consists of a dynamic group with various ages and backgrounds. Pontus Sundset Granat, Corrado Di Lorenzo, Hui-Han Hu Gustavsson, Philip Sundset Granat and Sakari Romera Tuurala each have a unique language as dancers.

The distinct lights are designed by Tobias Hallgren, manager of the company Lumination of Sweden. His techniques embrace the dancers’ movements in a magical and moving way.

Together, these talents create performances that oscillate between the deep oceans, the cloud realms of heaven, and the distant edge of outer space. Virpi Pahkinen Dance Company takes us through a spiritual and humorous journey through music, lights and dance.
